Fire assay is the most reliable technique when it comes to gold determination. A 30 grams fraction is mixed with a flux containing lead oxide. When heated the lead fuses and absorbs any gold in the sample. Impurities are taken into the molten slag. The content of the crucible is poured into a mould. The slag solidifies into glass.
The slag is broken and the lead button is hammered into a cube. The lead button is then transferred into a pre-heated cupel. The lead melts and is absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead that was added to serve as a collector. The precious metal bead is later flattened and taken to the analytical laboratory for gold determination. |
