Any single element of the periodic table chart has its own signature. In AAS we are interested by the wavelength at which a given element will absorb energy. Metals of interest dissolved in an acidic solution are aspirated into a sample chamber. The heat generated from the burner releases electrons from the solution which causes instability. As it wants to return to a stable stage, it can only absorb energy of its species. We are using a light beam of which the cathode is made of the pure element to determine. The amount of energy absorbed by the sample is directly related to its concentration. |
